Range Roaming – Colorado 2013 – Days 131-134

Hanging out on the I-70 corridor: August 23-26

Friday August 23, 2013, 14 miles (23 km) – Total so far: 4,338 miles (6,981 km)

My tour is drawing to a close. I’m trying not to think about it. I just want to keep going and going. Over the days that I’m hanging out here in the heart of Colorado’s ski resorts, I try to squeeze all I can out of the days. They are numbered now.

I also enjoy having a motel room – I don’t foresee bike tours in the future having this much luxury, since I’ve given away the budding career that allowed me to have a pretty big budget for this ride. I guess it’s good that I really enjoy, and actually prefer, camping!

Over the four days I’m here I go for several hikes, I ride my bike all over the place (I’ve only put down 14 miles, though I really rode more like 60), I shop my little heart out at the outlet stores (I absolutely HATE shopping, but I do get some needed items like new sunglasses and bike shorts), I get my hair cut (FINALLY!), and I enjoy time people-watching at Lake Dillon.

I also go to a BMX/mountain bike contest and watch the chicks absolutely ripping it up, performing tricks that were brand new back in the early 90s when I rode. I go out for beers with some old-school BMXers I meet at the contest and really enjoy talking about the good old days and how everyone still has bikes in their lives.

My old friend from CSU days also makes a huge effort to come down and hang out with me for the weekend. He has really embraced life in the past eight years and his exuberance and curiosity are inspiring. I am so, so fortunate to have such great friends and family, and relationships that have endured time and distance. It is always so hard to say goodbye to such good times and such good people.

This creek is flowing pretty good for August. The monsoon has been really active this year! I get rained on every day I’m up here.

One of my friends from my Colorado State days has come down to hang out with me. He has incredible energy and enthusiasm for life which is contagious. I am so fortunate to have a lot of friendships that have endured time and distance. I’ll miss this guy when I head home.
