4,000 for 40 – July Ride 1 – Day 1

Jindera – Wagga Wagga

Sunday July 17, 2016, 90 miles (145 km) – Total so far: 1,782 miles (2,868 km)

The past month has been WET. Drizzly. Misty. Rainy. Foggy. Crappy. We rode under perpetually grey skies. We rode in light rain. We made the most of the delightfully cool temperatures even though they were accompanied by so much moisture. Some highlights are documented in the video below (it is missing its audio here since I uploaded it to youtube without the copyright music). Read more

Wagga Wagga – Jindera

Monday July 18, 2016, 101 miles (163 km) – Total so far: 1,883 miles (3,031 km)

The plan today is to go 110 miles on different back roads to get home. I have a rough route in mind but no turn-by-turn plans. We’ll see what the wind has to say and route accordingly.

110 miles on rough chip-seal and gravel means a long day, regardless. I can average about 13 mph on the rough chip-seal with a partial load. On gravel I can usually do about 11 mph. If the gravel is crap, it’s usually about 8-9 mph or less. Sunrise is around 7.15am. Sunset is about 4.55pm. Do the math. If we leave not long after sunrise, you can see that we will be cutting it pretty close on daylight, even if we never stop at all. Read more

Aborted weekend ride – Jindera to Henty

Monday August 15, 2016, 36 miles (58 km) – Total so far: 1,919 miles (3,089 km)

This ride was supposed to be a three-day through Henty, The Rock and back home. However, my tire issues culminated on this ride. At 36 miles into it, the tire boot failed and I had no way to fix it that would give me confidence heading into areas without an easy way to get home. So I aborted the ride at Henty and had dear husband come get me. I didn’t take any pictures, and hadn’t planned to write up the abortion. However, I need to put these miles in as loaded miles, so the miles/kilometres in this journal match my own log and my bike computer.

Wind Cave National Park to Custer

Monday September 12, 2016, 21 miles (34 km) – Total so far: 21 miles (34 km)

Today is just a short day. Baby H is 11-months-old. She enjoys riding in the trailer, but only for 2-3 hours at a time. So our days will purposely be very short.

Jen’s mom, sister and nephew are going to go on a cave tour first thing. Then Sister C is going to drive up to Custer and ride back on the Mickelson Trail to meet us. Jen’s mom will meet us all in Custer later. Read more

Rained out – Drive to Hill City and Mt Rushmore, then short out-and-back ride from Hill City in the afternoon

Tuesday September 13, 2016, 14 miles (23 km) – Total so far: 35 miles (57 km)

It’s still raining and COLD in the morning. Supposedly, the showers should ease this afternoon, but at 9am, it is not looking good. In a brief break between showers earlier in the morning, I darted out of my tent and packed up everything. I managed to keep all my gear dry, but who likes packing up a soaking wet tent when it is 30-something F? Yuck! I pack up Jenny’s wet tent, too. But tent duty is more suited to my skills than baby duty! I assist with Sister C’s tent – it’s too big to do alone! Read more

Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway

Wednesday September 14, 2016, 47 miles (76 km) – Total so far: 82 miles (132 km)

If you’ve never ridden the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway through Custer State Park in South Dakota, then you must! It should most definitely be on your bike bucket list. It is so, so fun and very scenic. It is a twisty, curvy, climbing, descending piece of heaven. Go early in the morning and you won’t even have to worry about traffic – because it does get traffic-y as the day goes past 10am. Read more
